The 34-year-old man was walking with a woman along the bike track in the parklands near O’Dell St about 5.30pm on Tuesday.
“They were confronted by three young offenders, one armed with a knife and another with a golf club,” New England Detective Inspector Ann Joy told Fairfax Media.
“They demanded money and after a short altercation, the male victim sustained a small wound to the abdomen.”
Police said the armed trio, believed to be about 14 to 16 years old, ran off towards Butler St.
The victim was treated by paramedics and taken to Armidale hospital where he was treated by doctors.
Police said he had since been released. The woman was not injured and police said the trio fled empty handed.
“A crime scene was established and an extensive canvass and search of the area was conducted,” Detective Inspector Joy said.
“Any incident where a person has armed themselves with a knife has the potential to escalate into something resulting in a severe injury.
Anytime there is a situation where we have offenders arming themselves with a knife is a concern.”
