SANTOS may be close to releasing the Narrabri Gas Project’s long-awaited Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), after backing away from another project to focus on its release.
The company voluntarily withdrew an application, which would have allowed it to use gas from pilot wells to fuel the Wilga Power Station, rather than flaring it off.
When The Leader first reported about the application in October 2016, environmental groups were concerned the company was exploiting a loophole that would allow the commercial exploitation of coal seam gas, while calling it exploration.
A Santos spokesperson said the company had withdrawn the application “to focus on the release of the Narrabri Gas Project EIS, which it hopes to submit to the government in the near future”.
The Leader understands that if approved, the EIS would render the previous application redundant.
The critical document has been a long time coming. In January 2015, the company said the EIS was “close to finalisation”.
Santos has decided to withdraw the application to focus on the release of the Narrabri Gas Project EIS.
