David George Thompson has been in custody since his arrest in East Tamworth on January 5.
The 42-year-old faces a charge of aggravated break-and-enter and commit serious indictable offence, namely stealing the money container.
Thompson’s case was mentioned in Tamworth Local Court this week but Magistrate Clare Farnan adjourned it to later this month.
Thompson was formally refused bail.
He is yet to enter a plea after police allege he broke into the Tudor Hotel in Peel St in the early hours of New Years Day.
It’s alleged Thompson broke in to the hotel through a back door by smashing a window on the door.
He’s then accused of stealing a plastic bottle about 1.30am which contained almost $3,000 that had been raised by the community.
The money has not been recovered and police said investigations are continuing into the alleged stealing.
