Owners Martin and Cheryl Oppenheimer have a focus on breeding sheep that make more profit with less costs.
Now eating quality can be improved by selection for shear force and intra-muscular fat.
- Martin Oppenheimer
The former said there was plenty of demand for productive sheep that produced high-quality lamb and fibre.
“There appears to be unlimited demand for sheep with more early growth, in both merino and terminal lambs. The lambs finish faster and require less feed.
“Fat and muscle are more important for improving reproduction and now eating quality can be improved by selection for shear force and intra-muscular fat. It’s a win-win.”
Petali Poll Merinos has improved average ASBV growth by 1.8kg, fleece weight by 4.3 per cent plus fat by 0.2mm in the past year.
