The New England Dorset Fair will be held on February 1, at the Guyra Showgrounds, Marne Street Guyra.
Featuring 80 top quality Poll Dorset rams, the sale will commence at 2pm, following the regular sheep sales at the Guyra Saleyards.
All studs are accredited Brucellosis free and all sheep are free to enter Queensland.
The fantastic line-up of vendors this year are Yasloc – Andrew Say (Glen Innes), Edwinstowe – Rob Mansbridge (Glen Innes), Talgragar – Peter Bell (Gravesend), Palana – Keith Loosmore (Warialda), Bannawerra – Warren Press (Uralla), Tenterfield High School (Tenterfield) and Amelie – BD & V Sharpe (Uralla).
Last year all 61 rams offered at the sale were sold, reaching a top of $1500 and an average of $865.
The top priced was achieved by a stud ram sold by Andrew Say, Yasloc Poll Dorsets, Glen Innes.
Two of Mr Say’s flock rams also took out second top price, both selling for $1450.
The volume buyer of the sale last year was Peter Jackson, “Ryan’s Farm”, Llangothlin, who purchased 15 rams to top at $1100 and average $836.
Mr Jackson has been a long time buyer at the Poll Dorset fair and purchased his rams from a range of studs on the day.
He said he likes to purchase from the New England Dorset Fair as the sheep he purchases from the fair are always of high quality.
It also allows him to source a mix of genetics in the one place.
In a prime lamb production system improving the quality of the lambs is an important way of increasing profitability and efficiency.
Choosing the right ram genetics for your system is the first step in maximising the potential profit.
