The 15-year-old was sentenced to 18 months in custody by Magistrate Michael Holmes in Armidale Children’s Court for several offences including stealing a car and taking it on a joyride as well as driving dangerously without a helmet on an unregistered bike in a chase.

The chase was sparked on May 24 when police received reports of an unregistered blue Yamaha trail bike being ridden by two boys without a helmet, who managed to avoid officers by riding on and off roads near Cookes Rd.

Then on June 19, the 15-year-old was seen on CCTV driving a stolen Mitsubishi Triton, which was stolen from a Mann St home in Armidale.

The teen was seen behind the wheel of the car when he stopped at a service station on Warialda Rd, Inverell, about 3.45am before driving off without paying for the diesel. 

He will be eligible for parole after 12 months in custody.

Meanwhile, his 16-year-old brother has also been sentenced to a control order for several charges including a break-and-enter in Hargrave St, Armidale.

After knocking on the door of the unit about 6.30am on November 2, the teenager then returned to the property when the owner left, ransacking the home and stealing several goods including keys, jewellery, boxing gloves, medication, phones, an Ipod, perfume and a wallet.

Just a few hours later, the teenager then broke into a Lynches Rd home and stole a backpack which he stuffed with stolen goods including a laptop, a Playstation and games, a hard drive, bank documents and a bank card, wallets, cash, jewellery and a ride-on lawn mower.

He was later spotted mowing lawns at two houses using the stolen goods.

He was arrested a day later where police recovered several of the goods inside an Armidale home.

He was also found in possession of 3.9g of cannabis when he was apprehended, and has been in custody since.

The teen will be eligible for parole, next year.
