Council will investigate the temporary installation of mobile CCTV cameras in high crime areas and additional lighting in local parks.
Mayor Steve Toms said he believed CCTV was a useful tool for police and increasing their presence would form part of the council’s plan for the next 10 years.
“Improved lighting in the parks was raised, as well as the benefits of council installing more CCTV cameras in Grey Street and investigating the use of mobile cameras in problem areas,” he said.
“These are matters that will be considered as part of the Ten Year Community Strategic Planning process currently underway.”
Glen Innes Police Sergeant Mark Johnston said the current Council CCTV cameras had been useful for policing in Grey Street.
“We find CCTV very useful because it deters people from committing offences, as they are aware of the areas that are covered,” he said.
Where footage is available to police, in most cases, it increases their chances of a prosecution.
“It is a very good evidence gathering tool,” Sgt Johnston said.
Cr Toms said better security was something that local businesses could also become actively involved in.
Business In Glen President Jim Ritchie said they have recently put in an application for a state government grant to extend CCTV coverage from Meade Street to Wentworth Street.
