This year’s competition was a resounding success with more than 70 students attending from schools across the region.
The show and sale will be held on January 31 and February 1, 2017 at the Armidale Exhibition Centre.
Association president Chris Clonan said students don’t need to have prior judging experience.
“There will be a merino sheep and wool judging demonstration prior to the competition,” he said.
“It’s a great opportunity for students to learn more about merinos from industry experts and there will be plenty of stud breeders on hand to talk to as well.”
The competition will end with a barbecue lunch, sponsored by National Australia Bank, Agribusiness, with two students to be selected as associate judges for the main show in the afternoon.
This year, for the first time, the winner was eligible to attend the Royal Agricultural Society’s Sydney Royal Easter Show as the representative for the Northern Merino Ram Breeders' Association in the junior sheep judging competition.
Angus Dawson, Armidale, won and went on to place second in the Merino Sheep Young Judges State Championship at Sydney.
In 2017 the Northern Merino Ram Breeders' Association will provide the successful competitor (who must be 15 or older) with $200 travel reimbursement, with the NSW Stud Merino Breeders' Association to make a contribution as well.
