So that's what we did, and it was very easy. Too easy. The Australian International Tattoo Expo, in Melbourne all weekend, had people everywhere with amazing ink everywhere, just dying to talk about their tattoos and be photographed.

Here's six of them, talking about their favourites.

Kathy Bullen, 28, bartender. 

"These are like childhood memories for me. Just, like, I'm not a kid anymore but I can still be a kid at heart. I have six from the original 90's Pokemon set. On this arm I have Charmander and Eevee, both original Pokemon. The cards came out when I was ten and I've still got all the cards, they were currency at school (in Perth), we were trading under the table, people were selling fakes, it was a big deal. The first tattoo I got was a nautical star, the idea was 'no matter where I am I can find my way home.' I got that the day after I turned 18, the moment I could set foot in a tattoo shop basically. I was always dying to get one."

Mat Rogers, 28, tattooist

I got my eyes done a year ago. I saw it and just loved the aesthetic. The first tatt I got was when I was 18, it's the Slipknot logo on my stomach. My mum asked me what I wanted for my 18th and I said 'a tattoo!' It's been a slippery slope from there. Actually, as soon as I saw someone who had the eyeballs done - its proper name is sclera - like, the moment I saw it, I knew I had to get it done myself. Luna Cobra did it for me and it's not really like a tattoo because they inject pigment into the eyeball. He won't say exactly how he does it because he invented it and he doesn't want too many people to know plus with copycats there's been some people go blind. It doesn't hurt at all, there's no nerve endings in the eyeball. There's two or three of us in Melbourne, I know someone who has an aqua mint-blue and also I know someone with gun-metal grey but mine is black. Black on black. Some people handle it better than others when I meet them. But if I worried what other people thought of me my life would be bland."

Kenje Nishimura, 42, businessman

This is my wife as a Buddha on one side and my sister as a Buddha on the other side. Neither of them are finished. It might take me a long time to get it all finished. I am from Osaka in Japan but my tattoos are by Horigen Tattoo in Tokyo and I travel to them to get their work on me. I started on these ones one year ago. How many more years, I do not know. But I like to keep my mother and my sister close to me."

Sarah Gray, 28, medical student

I'm about to start my fifth year of studying medicine and I want to be an orthopaedic surgeon.
I have always been a big fan of horror and my right arm is a sort of horror-themed sleeve with a zombie doctor being the centre of attention. I have a zombie nurse on my left leg and both zombies are done by Bumer (in Adelaide) who has been a friend for a long time but is my boyfriend now. I give him a lot of creative freedom. I consider myself a collector; the tattoo artists I choose have free reign. I also have a Freddie Kruger and a Mike Myers.
I work part time as a tattoo model while I study. As a future clinician, I think it is fine to be tattooed like this. Why not? Patients are looking for good rapport with their doctor, not one who looks a particular way.

My favourite is my cat, which is a tattoo of my real cat, Nibbler. You know Futurama? Nibbler is a small monster in Futurama. It is very nice and traditional ... Nibbler is in a frame  ... It is like a love heart and she is wearing her little bell. I like cute things, I like animals, I love my cat Nibbler, except the only problem is this tattoo of her was done from photographs of her as a baby cat and when she got older her eyes changed colour so in the tattoo they are blue-ish but in real life Nibbler's eyes are now green-ish."
