Amid reports the virus had hit local schools, Hunter New England Health said there were cases reported to their public health team.
“I can certainly confirm gastro is doing the rounds in the community,” Dr Kat Taylor from HNEH Public Health told The Leader.
“Individual cases are not notifiable to us, but certainly outbreaks in institutional settings we do know about and this is where the viruses can really spread around.”
Dr Taylor said it was important locals paid attention to their hand hygiene and were not to prepare food for other people if they were displaying any symptoms of the bug.
“We encourage them to stay home for at least 24 hours after their symptoms have cleared up and to stay away from places that vulnerable people might be such as hospitals, child care and aged care facilities,” she said.
