The 26-year-old was part of a star-studded generation of young German players who came through seven or eight years ago. Some, such as Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos, have built on that potential and become regulars with the national team.

Beister's career has been stymied by injury and disappointment and he has not been able to reach those heights, hence his move on loan to Victory from his Bundesliga club Mainz.

The right-side midfielder/winger only arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday morning but was training with his new teammates on Thursday.

A native of Hamburg in northern Germany, Beister is hoping to convince coach Kevin Muscat that he is worthy of some involvement in Monday night's A-League clash with Wellington Phoenix.

Beister says he has followed the A-League and the fortunes of Victory, whom he discussed with former Victory winger and his ex-Fortuna Dusseldorf teammate Robbie Kruse before deciding to come to Australia.

And he is also aware of the big impression made by his fellow German Thomas Broich, like Beister a youthful prodigy back home for whom things did not work out in the high-pressure world of the Bundesliga.

Broich has been a huge success with Brisbane Roar and Beister would be happy to make even half as good an impression in his first spell in Australia.

"This league is getting better and better, but for me it's a challenge, it's not like an adventure. I want to improve, I want to get better," he said.

"It's an easy decision to move now because this is, for me, new motivation. I don't know him [Thomas Broich] personally, but he had the same situation like mine was in Germany. His move to Australia was that he wanted to have a new chapter in his life and career.

"It's a little bit like my situation. I don't know how long I will stay here. But first it's important to improve and acclimatise and then go on the pitch as fast as I can."

Beister says if he has a choice it will be as a wide midfielder or attacker.

"I prefer to play as a right winger. That's how I became a professional in Germany.

"But I love just playing one-on-one, with the speed inside to maybe create a one-on-one, or shoot, or assist the No.9. Or maybe I can play like a No.10, supporting the No.9, playing between the lines, creating chances. I am not a typical No.9 ... I am not that big striker who plays with the back to goal."

Beister said Kruse, who plays in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, convinced him that he could reboot his career in Melbourne.

"I was asking Robbie about the club, about the city. He was totally positive that the club is very professional, like a family, it was like the same in Dusseldorf.

"I watched the game against Adelaide. I was impressed with the quality. It was a little bit of luck at the end, but there is much potential in the team."
