Students have been involved in learning about mindfulness this term.
Mindfulness is the practice of being aware of your surroundings and how they impact on you. Mindfulness strengthens students' cognitive, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development.
Students from K-6 were involved in some short mindful activities that taught them about breathing, relaxing and being aware of their bodies. Mrs Hardes came to visit and brought with her a wealth of knowledge and information about how to incorporate mindful practices into our classrooms.
The Armidale School
Always a highlight on the Term 4 Junior School calendar at The Armidale School, Languages Day gives students from Transition to Year 5 a taste – literally – of other cultures.
During the day they rotated throughout a range of activities. Some were food related, such as cooking crepes on stoves in the French room, serving and enjoying food in a French Canadian café, and decorating a Buche de Noel (a log-shaped Christmas cake).
They made an artwork inspired by Matisse; played age-appropriate games including Le Chat et la Souris (‘cat and mouse)’ and Canard Canard L'Oie (‘duck duck goose’) in the playground, learnt about origami cranes and how to make them and rounded things off with some African singing.
“There’s nothing like learning by immersion, and Languages Day is a great way of engaging the children in the cultural aspects of not just France but other countries as well,” said head of junior school Ian Lloyd.
“It’s something they look forward to every year – knowing that’s it not just about the food! The students are grateful to the hard work of senior school head of languages Kathryn Tamminga and our junior school languages teacher Anne Hine, for making it happen.”
Wallabadah Public School
Fourteen Wallabadah Public School students went to Canberra recently. They showed everyone what clever and well-mannered students we have at Wallabadah.
At Questacon, every child overcame their fears on free fall and made and discovered science theories with experiments in air and movement. Many made a coin at the Mint and watched Titan the robot lift huge weights of coins into the hopper. When students visited Parliament House, Rosie the guide managed to get them a wave from the Prime Minister when he walked by to the House of Representatives.
All the children’s physical skills were challenged when they pitted themselves against the elite sports stars at the Australian Institute of Sport.
At the Old Parliament building, Joey, Sienna and Quaydan presented arguments in Senate to Madam President, Mrs Saunders. As a part of the speech, they had to create and build structures to support their particular basic rights.
At the War Memorial, the guide Gordon showed us all a WW1 connection to Wallabadah. Ernest Kelly died in Egypt in 1916. Captain Jayde placed a red poppy alongside his name and Mr Jackson contacted his relatives and they were very moved by our school gesture. Quaydan and Lani visited a family home when photos were taken of them outside Blundell cottage.
There were a number of comments from tour guides about the children’s enthusiasm and knowledge and several people on the street complimented them on their behaviour and their smart uniform. Well done Wallabadah!
The school welcomed Grayson Tilse. Grayson is halfway through a four week practicum from UNE.

Congratulations to Holly Martin and Emily Wamsley on achieving a Gold Certificate.
A huge thank you to IGA Quirindi for their generous donation to the P&C. The donation will go towards purchasing valuable resources for students.
The P&C have already committed to purchasing a set of readers for the newly implemented Multilit program.
What a fabulous morning the school had on Thursday, October 20 with the 2017 Kinder students. It was fantastic to see the students come along and try what our school has to offer.

Y5/6 students enjoyed an excursion in Sydney recently.
Mr Clery and Mrs Rheinberger accompanied the students along with parents, Mr Brown and Mrs McCulloch who volunteered to help. This biannual excursion was a wonderful opportunity to explore Sydney with their peers and teachers.
The school recently celebrated its annual book fair with a disco and sausage sizzle. The weather was freezing, but the children were not deterred and came dressed in all things Australian for the evening.
