Four out of six teams were on hand for the first match of the season with West Tamworth coming out on top to beat the Old Boys 95 to 85 at Riverside 4.
North Tamworth went up against South Tamworth but were defeated in the first match at Chauvel Park.
In what was initially started about three years ago to promote a love of the game among local women, the competition also includes a team from Calrossy and Peel Valley.
Event coordinator Kristian Grattan said another season would kick off after Christmas, and that the competition had the potential to cater for up to 10 teams.
The competition has seven rounds, plus finals and grand final matches at the end of the season.
He encouraged local women interested in picking up the bat to give it a go, and believed the city could foster some great cricketing talent.
Grattan said there had also been wide-spread interest on social media for the sport.
“It hasn’t been a bad start, we have six clubs in it again,” he said.
“There are four Tamworth based cricket clubs and Peel Valley and Calrossy have got a team in there.
“It was started to promote women’s cricket in the area.
“Tamworth is too big of an area not to have women’s cricket happening here. It has grown a lot over the last few years.”
Grattan said the games were all in good fun and women from the ages of 12 years old and above were able to join a team and get involved in the sport.
It’s not all headgear and armour either, there’s also a modified ball used for the competition, with no need for protective wear, he said.
“It’s to have a bit of fun and promote girl’s cricket in Tamworth,” he said.
Grattan said those interested in giving the game a go or interested in putting a team together next year can contact him for more information on 0428 465 631
Round two will kick off next Monday from 5.15pm.
