WAR and peace, tolerance and harmony and a series of thought-provoking images with the potential to change your life are on show at Tamworth Regional Gallery until December 1.
The Courage to Care exhibition has the ability to inform us all of the dangers of prejudice and discrimination and invites visitors to understand the roles of victims, perpetrators and bystanders, by exposing them to survivors of the Holocaust and their rescuers. The gallery’s Pam Brown said this would be an ideal exhibition for not only the region’s residents to appreciate, but school and community groups would find it fascinating, too.
Courage to Care chairman Andrew Havas said it was an exhibition that challenged our thinking, perception and had the potential to change our behaviour.
“World War II is a period that seems so far removed from our present-day experience, but what this exhibition shows us is that the experiences lived at that time are as relevant for us today as they were then,” Mr Havas said.
“The content provides us with the opportunity to question our ability to resist the ills of our contemporary world.”
Visitors have the extraordinary opportunity to meet and tour the exhibition with living historians, who risked their lives to save others during World War II, and view authentic objects from the time period.
The announcement of the Local Hero acknowledges the personal contribution of Tamworth resident Eddie Whitham, who has devoted a lifetime to making a difference to others through acts of humane-inspired kindness and by providing shelter to those seeking refuge in a new land. He is an example of how one person can make a difference by simply extending a caring hand.
The Courage to Care program is an initiative of the not-for-profit Jewish community organisation B’nai B’rith and is staffed solely by volunteers.
Courage to Care promotes tolerance and harmony within the broad Australian family of communities, encouraging participants to stand up against bullying, intolerance and racism and to simply extend the hand of friendship.
