“It’s really important to get going on [Dungowan Dam] – that’s how we grow the area,” the New England MP and Agriculture Minister said.
“We want to move it to a 44 megalitre dam and that’s going to give real security to the city of Tamworth to go to about 150,000 people.”
Mr Joyce said the federal government had done its part by providing $75m to fund the dam's construction and $850,00 for the feasibility study.
It is now up to the NSW government to conduct the feasibility study.
A spokesperson for Water Minister Niall Blair said the Department of Primary Industries and Water had met with Tamworth Regional Council to “finalise the scope of the study” and work would “commence as a matter of priority”.
Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson said he toured the proposed site and discussed the matter with Mr Blair as early as last week.
