A report in The Australian on Wednesday revealed dozens of former Wallabies had put their signatures on a letter addressed to ARU chairman Cameron Clyne and his board, outlining a number of concerns they had about the organisation's strategic approach.

Although Pulver has not officially seen the letter, he agreed to meet those who have signed the document but said he felt there was more noise at this stage than genuine ideas of how to improve the state of the code.

"Apart from misquoting a $2.4 million investment in the community game - when it's actually $9.2 million - there's nothing else tangible in that document that specifically tells me what variable to our current strategy they would like to see," Pulver told Fairfax Media. "So I would like to have a conversation about where the game should go."

When told Pulver did not see a whole lot of ideas being put forward in the letter, Poidevin said: "I'd really challenge that. I don't think Bill's getting it. There's going to be a lot of signatures on that letter. Bill and the board have to take note. If you don't respect the experience and the hard yards put in by those Wallabies and the Wallaby coaches and you want to hide an ivory tower, it's going to end in tears. I wouldn't be trying to bat it away."

The key argument of the letter is the ARU is turning its back on grassroots rugby, a claim Pulver and the ARU vehemently deny.

Pulver admitted he was surprised so many former players had banded together to put their signature on the letter but pledged to hear their concerns, something he has done on a number of occasions already this year, notably over a fierce debate over club rugby funding.

"I know a lot of the people who are listed on that letter," Pulver said. "They're people that normally would have come to me to talk to me about the strategic plan we have in place. Let's have a dialogue and understand what they think's working and what's not working and we can talk it through.

"I'd love to sit down with them tomorrow. We all have the same objective and that is to see the game grow and prosper in Australia. These are people who I take very seriously - they're Wallabies who know the game very well."

Poidevin, one of Australia's greatest back-rowers who featured in 59 Tests between 1980 and 1991, has stressed how seriously he and fellow players are taking the matter.

He also pointed to the success of the Shute Shield this year, a competition for which clubs did not receive any direct funding from the ARU.

"Any smart management board will listen to their constituents," Poidevin said. "A lot of the guys, including myself, spent a lot of time on rugby across all age groups, across clubs. We're doing things which Australian Rugby Union doesn't recognise and should recognise. Club rugby was probably the best we've seen in 20 years and they've done it without the ARU, so they must be doing something right. That grand final at North Sydney Oval just told you how tribal the game is and how loyal people are.

"I would just say to Bill: 'It's not [former Wallaby] Brett Papworth leading the charge on his own. Everyone is going with him here and you've got to sit down and listen'."
