Similarly Cricket ACT chief executive Cameron French says Cricket NSW's landmark pay deal for their women cricketers is exciting and he is confident it wasn't a threat to the ACT Meteors.

Cricket NSW announced on Thursday their women's team, the Breakers, will now earn a minimum wage of at least $35,000, paving the way for the game's leading females to turn professional.

It comes a month after a new collective bargaining agreement for the inaugural National Netball League ensured players would earn a minimum salary of $27,375.

Netball Australia will begin discussions for a new CBA for the Diamonds players after their upcoming four-Test Constellation Cup series against the New Zealand Silver Ferns, which starts in Sydney on Sunday.

The Diamonds finished a two-day camp at the Australian Institute of Sport on Thursday, where Alexander said they had a vastly different squad to the one that won the World Cup last year.

Women's sport is going through a boom in terms of financial recognition at the moment, with cricket and netball leading the way in remuneration.

Alexander said the Breakers' pay deal was "huge" for women's sport, after last summer's highly successful Women's Big Bash League "made them sit up and take notice".

"I know cricket are really putting the pressure on, they've got the dollars. What they haven't done is necessarily put the dollars from the men's sport into the women's sport," she said.

"Once they saw how good the WBBL can be I think that made them sit up and take notice that they'd actually better get serious about this.

"It creates a snowballing effect because it's not just us [netball], it's women's sport. When you're talking about women's sevens they'll mention us [the Diamonds] as well."

Diamonds midcourter Gabi Simpson was equally excited about what the cricket deal meant for women's sport.

"Competition is great, that's what creates growth. As you can say when talking about New Zealand – the better they are the better we have to be," she said.

"It's fantastic for women's sport and for netball."

The standard contract for Meteors players is about $11,000 – less than a third of that now being offered to their opponents at the Breakers.

The Breakers have been the dominant force in the Women's National Cricket League having won all bar three titles since the competition's inception in 1996/97.

Despite the landmark deal, French harbours no fears of losing Canberra's best talent to the SCG-based outfit, which would make the Breakers even stronger.

"I think it's really exciting for domestic cricket," French said.

"New South Wales is certainly leading the way. Where possible and if finances permitted I know most of the states would love to do the same."

French said with differing funding models Cricket ACT would rely on their ability to provide opportunity in a bid to lure talent to the nation's capital, kick-started by the new facilities at Phillip Oval and new strength and conditioning programs already professionalising the women's environment.

A new high-performance training centre is being built at Phillip and French hoped it would be operational by August next year.

The Cricket ACT boss felt the new centre could provide a similar boost for domestic cricket as Manuka Oval's lights did for international cricket in Canberra.

French felt the combination of Cricket ACT's coaching programs, new facilities and the opportunity to play for a WNCL team would ensure the Meteors' future.

"I think people are always going to gravitate to where they have the greatest opportunity and where they can get the best program," French said.

"Certainly being paid a minimum wage assists. But what we're offering caters for players that want greater opportunity and a really tailored individualised program.

"We think the Phillip facility will have the same impact on our talent programs [as the lights did for Manuka].

"Once we have the facility there with the indoor training facility and the turf we'll become a destination point for aspiring pathway players, male and female ... we can actually be quite active in the market in attracting people to come and base themselves and live and play here."
