The 39-year-old was spotted twice on Thursday in Tamworth, sparking a search involving local police and the dog squad.
Police have been told Barber was seen at Coles Supermarket off Kathleen St about 12.15pm and then around Shoppingworld about 2.30pm.
Oxley Acting Inspector Josh McKenzie said police were investigating whether Barber has access to a car or is being assisted by someone.
“It is an offence to assist or harbour an escapee and we would urge anyone with information on Mr Barber’s whereabouts to come forward,” he said.
“We would urge the public not to approach him but contact police.”
Barber was reportedly driving a white single cab utility and wearing a black tracksuit with a grey shirt, baseball cap, and was unshaven.
Police have been told he was in the company of another man.
Barber is described as being of Caucasian appearance, around 180cm to 185cm tall, about 80kg in weight, with a medium build, and short brown hair.
He has tattoos of boxing gloves on his back, a tattoo of a snake on his left forearm.
