Blue Lions ‘outstanding’

NEW England Hockey’s Under 15 Blue Lions girls’ side made it all the way to the semi-finals in their State Under 15 Indoor Championships in Maitland on the weekend.

Playing in their Pool B of Division 2, the Blue Lions were undefeated and beat Dubbo, Coffs Coast, Manning Valley and Illawarra on their way to a semi-final against Central Coast.

Unfortunately the side lost to Central Coast 7-1 but a third place was a great reward said HNE publicity officer, Denis Doughan.

“The New England team performed extremely well with Ashley Parker playing well in goals, supported by Brianna Sutton, Talia Constance and Georgina Cleanthous as the backs,”  Doughan said.

“Bronte Walsh, Claire Askey and Tahlia Rekunow played in the midfield with Jacko Burton and Elise Matheson as high forwards. The New England girls had a great weekend away both on and off the field. The entire team performed extremely well under the watchful eye of coach Matt Jackson, producing some outstanding results.”

Against Dubbo the side won 5-nil with goals from Jacko Burton, Georgina Cleanthous (2), Elise Matheson and Tahlia Rekunow. Burton scored twice in the 4-nil win over Coffs Coast with Cleanthous and Matheson again on the scorecard. In the 4-3 win over Manning Valley Matheson doubled up on the scoreboard with Burton and Rekunow adding the extras while Bronte Walsh joined Matheson and Rekunow on the scorecard in the 3-nil win over Illawarra.
