In a board meeting on Wednesday night, the Wests Entertainment Group (WEG) board decided to pull all sponsorship of the senior league competition, effective immediately.
In a statement to The Leader, Wests CEO Rod Laing said it had not been an easy decision.
“After a lengthy debate, Wests Entertainment Group (WEG) board are formally withdrawing all senior Rugby League sponsorship for the 2017 season effective immediately,” he said.
“This sponsorship includes West Tamworth Lions RLFC, Oxley Diggers RLFC, Group 4 Referees Association, Group 4 Rugby League and the Wests Knockout Competition.”
Mr Laing said the board had received several complaints and concerns from members, since the game which was marred by send-offs for unruly behaviour on September 11.
“Sadly, the ugly scenes that marred the grand final were embarrassing for our organisation, an organisation that has proved to be a strong and trustworthy brand in our local community over the last 30 years,” he said.
“In order to protect this brand and the organisation’s reputation the board decided to withdraw senior Rugby League sponsorship at its monthly board meeting held last night.”
The fallout comes as the Group 4 judiciary prepare to meet again on Thursday night to determine penalties for those charged with contrary conduct.
West Lions player Sean Nean faces a life ban, if found guilty, for allegedly headbutting a referee during the Group 4 grand final between North Tamworth Bears and West Lions.
He’s also charges with criminal offences stemming from the alleged incident.
Fellow West Lions player Matt Nean has been handed a 20 year ban for his behaviour in the grand final.
The Wests board have confirmed sponsorship of all junior rugby league and development will continue as normal.
“The WEG executive board received numerous letters, emails and telephone calls from concerned club and community members voicing their disgust and embarrassment over the incidents that occurred during the recent Group 4 grand final,” Mr Laing said.
“Due to the fact that WEG sponsors Group 4 and two teams within the Group the board did not want to be put into the position of taking sides.
“After 12 months, all groups and football clubs are welcome to apply for sponsorship. Before any funding is granted all senior football clubs must prove they have implemented a good corporate governance program.
“WEG wishes all rugby league groups well for the 2017 season and trusts this 12 month hiatus will see senior football clubs regroup, refocus and move forward.”
More to come.
