What is your business? Sunhill Dairy Goats is a small family-run business. We run 18 milking goats on our 12-acre property 10 minutes from Uralla. Our business has been operating since 2010 and focuses specifically on the benefits of goat’s milk as a natural product. Everything is manufactured here on-farm, from goat’s milk skin care, moisturisers, soaps and lotions to goat cheeses. In 2013 we opened the farm to the public. Daily we provide tours of the farm and dairy operations, with cuddles and pats aplenty. We operate a small farm shop and you will also find us at the Tamworth Farmers Market and various other markets around the New England.

Why did you get into this line of work? Our love of goats began in Tasmania where I was teaching and Richard was driving school buses. We owned a 40-acre property that was overgrown with blackberry. Our first goat was acquired to clear the land without using chemicals. He did such a great job at this that we decided to invest in more goats and also have a home milker.
What do you think is the biggest challenge in your industry? It is hard to keep up with the various food authority changes so that we can continue to comply and manufacture our artisan farmhouse goat cheeses.
What are you most proud of in your work? The development of our goat milk skin care range that has allowed people who suffer from eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, dermatitis and other skin conditions to benefit from the natural relief provided by goat’s milk.
Who do you most admire? Anyone that has a go. If you have a dream or a goal then you need to follow it and see where it will lead you. I never thought I would be a dairy goat farmer when I was a little girl growing up in Sydney. Life surprises you and being happy is pretty important.
What is your favourite time of the day? The afternoon feeding. I like to watch the girls in the paddock, it is always so very peaceful and puts a smile on my face.
What is your favourite invention? My Hydrating Day & Night Cream, the first product I developed for myself.
What do you love to do in your spare time? We love to travel so when we get a chance we try to get away from the farm. Last year we took three weeks off and travelled to Uluru to enjoy our beautiful country.
The final word: Running a small business is a challenge but extremely rewarding. We have been very creative in becoming diverse and unique. Our skin care range is sent all over the world through sunhillskin.com.au, we talk to our community weekly at markets and we have opened our farm. Technology and social media has helped in growing our business.
