New England police ramped up the search for Steven Barber on Monday after a man matching his description was seen on the Gwydir Highway, about 15km east of Glen Innes.
“A male believed to be Barber was sighted about 10am [on Monday] driving a Polaris All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) about 15km east of Glen Innes on the Gwydir Highway,” a police spokesperson said.
“The ATV was last seen entering farmland in that vicinity.”
Police said at the time Barber was wearing a green and brown camouflage jacket and long dark pants.
The 39-year-old escaped from the minimum security Glen Innes Correctional Centre on September 19.
Correctional officers noticed the window of Barber’s room was smashed and he was missing about 1.05am on September 20.
Barber is described as being of Caucasian appearance, around 180cm to 185cm tall, about 80kg in weight, with a medium build, and short brown hair.
He has tattoos of boxing gloves on his back and of a snake on his left forearm.
Police are urging anyone who knows the whereabouts of Steven Barber to come forward.
