The hotly contested competition is run by the Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC) and looks for the best sausages and burgers from independent butchers at a regional, state and national level.
While Mr Newton couldn’t crack the national championships this year, the Tamworth butcher said having his pork snags recognised in the state’s top three was an achievement in itself.
Mr Newton didn’t change up his winning recipe and says fresh, quality pork is the key to the product’s ongoing success.
The award-winning pork sausage is not a big seller at Mick’s Meat House at Northgate, but he says the recognition is “very good for his plain beef sausages”.
A regular entrant in the Sausage King meets, Mr Newton said a few new competitors jumped out at this year’s edition.
