Flocks of Magpie Geese from Australia’s northern fringe have been spotted in Boggabri recently.
“We get lots of ducks, pelicans… but these things I’ve never seen here before,” local resident Robyn Grover said. “They have been feeding on the oval. Apparently there are some at Narrabri too.”
Office of Environment and Heritage, Senior Wetlands and Rivers Conservation Officer Tim Hosking, said the nomadic species had returned to feed on our inundated floodplains.
“Formerly this species was quite common in NSW, however hunting pressure… meant they were shot out. They now appear to be re-colonising areas through central and northern NSW,” Mr Hosking said.
“They will stick around as long as they find good food and safety, possibly days to weeks.”
