When it comes to the issue of day care, preschool and kindergarten education, it is wise for parents to look ahead.
Some factor in early education when planning a family; for others it can be a last-minute scramble.
Regardless of when you start thinking about day care or preschool for your little one, there is no doubt it is a step that provides the foundations for a fruitful school career.
The important thing is to get your child enrolled early.
Preschools and daycare services are now taking names for admission next year.
Most services encourage parents to have a look around and get to know some of the staff before making the decision to enrol.
To make this process easier, many will be hosting open days to allow parents a chance to see the service in action.
There are possibly even more aspects to consider when deciding which primary and secondary school will be right for your child.
Parents need to take a whole range of issues into consideration and it will be different for every family.
Does your child have a particular interest such as music, sport, languages, vocational or academic studies that you want the school to nurture?
Is it important that the school is single sex or coeducational? Are boarding facilities important?
What is the school’s educational philosophy and what are the facilities?
Does the school have a comprehensive curriculum and what co-curricular activities are offered such as sport, music and camps?
Also determine parental involvement (if this is important) through a parents’ association or volunteering.
Cost is usually a factor, but don’t forget costs for textbooks, uniforms, excursions and extracurricular activities. Some scholarships or bursaries may be available.
Ask for a copy of the school’s prospectus, look at the school’s website and make an appointment to take a tour during school hours.
