ARMIDALE hosted some of the best young players in the region last weekend at the Sheriffs Tennis Academy Championships.
The three-day tournament featured some talented young players such as Tamworth’s Melanie Pearson, who won her Under 14 singles and doubles divisions as well as finishing runner-up in the Open B Doubles.
She went through the weekend losing just the one set.
This week some of the young male players from that Armidale tournament are in Gosford playing for North West in the State CHS Boys’ Tennis
Ciaran Lavers was beaten in the men’s open final at the Armidale Tennis Club courts on Sunday and yesterday he was part of an eight-player squad at Gosford.
He was unbeaten as well at Gosford, winning both his singles and doubles matches, North West CHS team manager Rowena Teege said.
In their first game yesterday North West played North Coast and, while they drew 6-all on sets, they lost the rubber on a countback, losing on games 49-46.
Lavers won his singles 6-1 and then paired with Farrer schoolmate Peter McDonagh to win their doubles 6-5.
NW number 7 Angus Dickson and number 8 Tom Fitzgerald (Oxley) also won their singles against North Coast.
NW wasn’t as successful against Sydney North in their second game, losing 9-3 on sets.
However, Lavers won his singles 6-1 and paired with McDonagh to win their doubles 6-1 as well.
Oxley’s Michael Seton won his singles yesterday, breaking a 6-all deadlock with his opponent by winning the tie-breaker 11-9.
Today, NW matches against Hunter and Sydney East in two important rubbers before playing crossover matches in the afternoon.
