The report reviewed the state’s liquor laws, two years after the King’s Cross lockout laws were introduced – however with local lockout laws already set, the sale of takeaway is likely to be the only change.
Tamworth Local Liquor Accord chair Roger Rumble welcomed the recommendation, saying it was a “fair compromise”.
“The 10pm rule impacted quite heavily on people working late hours, particularly hospitality workers, who weren't able to grab a bottle of wine after work,” Mr Rumble said.
“Relaxing it to 11pm should be a benefit to a lot of our customers, especially around the Christmas and New Year period.”
Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson pushed hard to have the 10pm rule changed and made a submission to the review.
He agreed relaxing the law to 11pm was a “good compromise” and “common sense”.
“I think it brings it back into balance – 10pm was way too tight,” Mr Anderson said.
There was a state-wide push from regional NSW to look at the 10pm takeaway rule, including a petition with more 10,000 signatures that was presented to parliament.
“The rule was implemented on the back of the Kings Cross lockout laws,” Mr Anderson said.
“We are not Kings Cross.”
Takeaway liquor sales after 11pm “are huge”, but Mr Rumble said he doubts the trading hours would be pushed beyond the recommendation.
“I think in the future 11pm will be the way it continues to go,” he said.
Deputy Premier Troy Grant said the government would now consider the report and deliver its response before the end of the year.
“There is significant community and stakeholder interest in the report and we are releasing it immediately to give everyone a chance to consider its findings and recommendations,” Mr Grant said.
