The wicketkeeper-batsmen is set to be spending plenty of time in the middle.
This weekend he’ll head to Dubbo to pad up for the Central North U19s in the McDonald's Country Colts Championships.
He’ll then turn around and make his way to Brisbane for the National U17s Championships, where he’ll play for the ACT/NSW Country U17s.
“It’s been a pretty exciting couple of weeks,” the just turned 17-year old said after learning of his selection late last month.
The two NSW sides - ACT/NSW country and NSW Metropolitan - were finalised following the State Challenge at Coffs Harbour.
Cornish played for the Country Thunder, along with Tamworth’s Tyson Rennie and Moree’s Paddy Montgomery.
Unfortunately for Montgomery he injured his ankle on the first day and is likely to be out for a couple of months.
Cornish had a strong carnival and produced some sharp glovework.
“On the first day I got a 20 and a catch and a stumping,” he said.
“The second day I didn’t get many and another catch and a stumping and I got another catch and a stumping on the last day.”
He wasn’t required to bat.
“I was happy with how I kept, I kept pretty well,” he said.
“I could have batted a bit better.”
He said making the Country team was his main goal for the season.
“Hopefully I can go alright at Nationals,” he said.
They run from September 26 through to October 6, and should be “a good experience”.
Listing Adam Gilchrist as an idol, Cornish has been flying down to Sydney every few weekends for training as part of the Cricket NSW Academy.
Inbetween he’s been training with the Central North academy and spending as much time in the nets as he can.
Not that he’s complaining, the more cricket the better.
“I really enjoy it,” he said.
Locally playing for Golf Club, Cornish is one of a few players stepping up to the 19s this weekend from the Central North Bradman Cup winning side.
Central North head to Dubbo looking to make it three titles in a row.
Cornish was also this week named in the Northern Inland Bolters squad to play in the Plan B Regional Bash.
