VIBRANT: Genevieve Dunn from Armidale won second place for her photograph titled Sport Ref. Judges said the shot was full of vibrant colour and captured the mood of the competition.
Two budding young Armidale photographers have taken out the top prizes in the inaugural Sporting Spirit photography competition.
Held by Sport and Recreation, the competition called for amateur photographers across North West NSW to capture the sporting spirit of their local community.
The judges – Barry Smith, chief photographer for The Northern Daily Leader, Greg Johnstone, former Tamworth Photography Club president and Anna Moulder, Breakfast Presenter on ABC New England North West – were full of praise for the young shutterbugs.
Angus Lawrence, age 12 from Armidale, won first prize for his photograph titled Competition Winner!
The judges believed this photograph truly captured the theme of the competition this year, Sporting Spirit, and said the photo was well shot and full of emotion.
Genevieve Dunn, age 11 and also from Armidale, won second place for her photograph titled Sport Ref and judges believed this photograph captured the competition theme in an artistic manner, with vibrant colours.
Genevieve also received the judges’ encouragement award for her photograph Sporting Boots. The judges agreed this photograph captured the family nature of sport in the country, displaying a wonderful parallel between the sport player’s boots and the farmer’s boots.
“Congratulations and thank you to all who entered the Sporting Spirit photography competition,” Gaylene Ryan, Western Region cluster co-ordinator from Sport and Recreation said.
“All entries were of a high standard and represented the sporting spirit of North West NSW,” she said.
The winners received money to spend on sports development programs in their local community.
