Well, the man comedy duo Hamish and Andy have crowned the best bloke in Australia has just upped his status even higher after going without a beer so they could have one each.

James Lord shot to nationwide fame on Wednesday after Hamish and Andy featured him in their prank segment, with Hamish ringing the 23-year-old Sydney electrician pretending to be Tim Barnard, a total stranger who needed a last minute reference to nab a job at an accounting firm.

Mr Lord is heard telling Hamish, "Yeah sweet, I'll just tell them that you're a ripper bloke."

Andy then rings back, acting as Graham Burn of Kells & Co. accounting firm, to check out "Tim's" reference.

Mr Lord bluffs his way through the grilling, even saying the fictitious Mr Barnard could be trusted with handling $1M.

"I was just trying my hardest to back up this Tim bloke. I was just trying to go through my head as quick as I can and answer as quick as I can, obviously because I thought it was real, to not let them catch on that I was just making it all up," Mr Lord said.

"I'd committed to it and I thought 'I'm going to go through with this and give it a good old shake' and they stitched me up a beauty."

Catching up with Mr Lord in the studio to discuss his sudden fame, selflessly backing up a stranger, Hamish and Andy put him through one last test - they offered him a beer.

"We never drink till after the show, but we were like 'we've got to have a beer, we've got to have a beer with James,' Hamish says as Andy lifts an Esky onto the radio desk.

When they open the Esky there's only two beers - one short for the three of them to enjoy a cold drink together.

"That's alright," Mr Lord says.

Andy holds two beers up. "You want us to have them?"

"Yeah, you can have them," Mr Lord says.

"He did it again!" Hamish exclaims, he and Andy clapping and jumping around, celebrating Mr Lord's laconic generosity - a man who would give up a beer so his friends could have one.

Summing up his new found fame as the best bloke in Australia, Mr Lord said: "I love the tag and I'll be trying to milk it for all it's worth. I told mum but mum doesn't agree with it but I'm hoping she'll come round."

Maybe he could get her something to drink too?
