Bradley Craig Mottram appeared via video link in Armidale Local Court on Wednesday morning from Lithgow Correctional Centre.
Legal Aid solicitor Wendy McAuliffe requested a two month adjournment and said the case had been held up because Corrective Services had moved her client.
“I know this matter has been in this list for a long time,” she said, adding she had only recently taken on the case from another private solicitor.
“What’s occurred, Mottram had a psychiatrist’s appointment booked … Mr Mottram was moved.”
The court heard Mottram had been moved twice but was now being housed in Lithgow, charged with the stabbing murder of his mother, Simone Mottram, on October 19, last year.
”That psychiatrist has now seen Mr Mottram,” Ms McAuliffe said.
“We’re awaiting on a report from the psychiatrist.
“[We were] served further material from police [on Tuesday].”
The court heard detectives had also served several discs of evidence on the defence.
Mottram has been in custody since the day of the alleged murder after he was arrested by police on the outskirts of Inverell.
Detectives from Strike Force Lotred – the police operation set up to investigate Ms Mottram’s death – allege Mottram crashed his mother’s red Hyundai Getz down an embankment off the Copeton Dam Rd, after allegedly stabbing her several times in her Froude St home.
She died at the scene.
Magistrate Michael Holmes granted the adjournment but said he wanted to see progress in the case because it was “a significant matter, it’s a murder”.
“Your lawyers are getting reports and looking at material,” he told Mottram, adjourning the case to November.
“And we will use the TV rather than bringing you up here.”
“Ok,” Mottram replied.
Mottram made no application for bail.
