This season the new split tier Second Division competition has allowed for an extra two grand finals this weekend, making for eight deciders across three different host clubs.
On Wednesday night in Narrabri inspirational North Tamworth skipper Scott Blanch took out the First Division best and fairest, just beating a fellow playmaker by just one point as the two prepare to face up in Sundays final at Jack Woolaston Oval.
West Lions half Sam Taylor was at the top of the list for most of the season alongside Blanch who finished with 19 votes, one vote clear of taylor and six votes clear of the third placed Lions prop Phil Beaton.
Taylor didn’t go home empty handed however, taking the top point scoring award with a mammoth 263 points from 18 tries, 91 goals and a field goal for the season, while Blanch won the tryscorers award with 25 for the year.
The reserve grade awards were even more closely contested between grand final opponents as Norths Nick O’Leary and Narrabri’s Norman Lawler shared the Player of the Year award before meeting on Sunday afternoon.
Lawler also drew in the try scorers tally, sharing the spoils with the Oxley Diggers Henry Slater with 11 each, while the Blues Kyle Adams scored 90 points for the season.
In the juniors young Armidale star Elijah Rasiga took out the Player of the Year award before he leads the Rams into a tough match against the Bears juniors.
Bears flyers Hayden Loughrey and Marcus Hayne won the highest try scorer and point scorer awards respectively.
In First Division league tag Oxley Diggers’ Abby Schmiedel cleaned up the points and try scorers tally with a record 45 tries and two goals, although Gunnedah star Jess Baker beat Schmiedel to the Player of the Year gong by just one point.
Baker will be the only winner not to be featuring in a grand final after her Bulldogs were knocked out of the preliminary final last week by Norths, who will meet the Diggers for the third year straight in a grand final at Jack Woolaston.
The Second Division Shield also saw two players from opposite sides of the grand final share the top gong with Werris Creek prop Thomas Brown and Uralla hooker Jack Doran left to sort it out on Sunday, as can Creek’s top try scorer Nathaniel Slater and Uralla’s top point scorer Harley Carlon.
Kim Resch wrapped up the league tag award and top point scorer after Kootingal’s unbeaten season, although will face top try scorer Uralla’s Alyce Walsh in the final.
In the Plate Walcha back rower Lachlan Brown scooped his second Player of the Year in as many seasons and will face Manilla’s top try scorer Mitch Doring on Saturday, while Bingara’s brad Craddock won top point scorer.
The Walcha Jillaroos cleaned up the tag awards the same way they cleaned up the minor title, with a clean sweep.
Lacey Latham was top try scorer, Rhiannon Moran top point scorer and Robyn Broadbent was named Player of the Year.
Gunnedah’s Hayden Smith was named the Rookie of the Year after a break out season for the Bulldogs.
