Greengrocer packs it in pink to send a powerful message

FARMER Bob’s fruit market in Tamworth was more about being in the pink yesterday to mark Pink Ribbon Day for breast cancer.

The fruit and vegetable outlet has been helping to raise money for breast cancer research during weekends in October by creaming off $1 per kilo from mushrooms sold in order to pass it onto the Australian Mushroom Growers.

The growers’ Mushrooms Go Pink campaign aims to raise $50,000 for Cancer Council Australia.

The packaging has been bright pink to attract consumer attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October.

Store manager Stuart Rennie said it was the first time Farmer Bob’s had joined the campaign.

“We’ve raised about $500 with a weekend to go,” Mr Rennie said.

“... hopefully, people come in and buy extra.”

He said Farmer Bob’s would be keen to keep contributing to the annual fundraiser.

“I reckon every year we’ll do it ... it doesn’t take much to do,” he said.

In Australia 2680 women die from breast cancer each year – almost seven every day of the year.

Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women after non-melanoma skin cancer.

It is the second most common cancer causing death in women after lung cancer.
