Li Cunxin’s iconic autobiography Mao’s Last Dancer was first published as a children’s picture book, The Peasant Prince. Monkey Baa Theatre Company is honoured to be adapting this story onto the stage at the Capitol Theatre, Tamworth on Monday, September 5 at 6pm and Tuesday, September 6 at 10.30am and 12.30pm.

For those who have seen the movie, read Li Cunxin’s autobiography or shared the picture book with their children, you will be familiar with the story. Li, a 10-year-old peasant boy, is plucked from his village in rural China and sent to a ballet academy in the big city. He leaves everything and everyone he knows, including his beloved parents.
Through years of grueling training and sheer determination, this boy transforms from an impoverished peasant to a giant of the international dance scene. Li’s courage, resilience and unwavering hope for a better life makes The Peasant Prince is a story to ignite our own aspirations to be the best person we can be.
The production company behind this beautiful adaptation, Monkey Baa Theatre Company, engages young people in the arts through extensive national workshop programs aimed at students, as well as creating professional development opportunities for young and emerging artists and teachers.
Recently, six free workshops were held throughout the region at various primary schools. All of the schools participating have children attending the production will greatly benefit from the live theatre experience and will gain a greater understanding of the production, which links directly to the work they are doing in Asian cultural studies.
Student workshops are adjusted to the level and capability of each group and have an emphasis on improving self-expression through creative play, self-confidence, communication and team building skills, all within a fun and safe environment.
Audiences will be captivated by this inspiring story targeted to aged six to 12 and their families. Definitely not to be missed – great for the whole family to share.
Always…Patsy Cline is coming to Capitol Theatre on August 31 and is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer.
The show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in l961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death.
The musical play includes 27 of Patsy’ unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight and stars award winning Australian country music singing sensation Courtney Conway as Patsy Cline and popular stage star Mandi Lodge as Louise Seger.
