It has been a long season for Armidale, not winning a game since joining from Group 19 this year, although coach and president Terry Carson said that the final round win has made the tough season all worth it. “We are ecstatic,” Carson said. “It was brilliant.”
While the Rams opened the scoring the Diggers lead the majority of the way until at 28-16 with eight minutes remaining the Rams turned it on.Two quick tries bought the Rams back to 28-all, before a wayward field goal attempt from the Rams was scooped up by Aaron Walsh who crossed on the bell to win the game. The Rams forfeit the second last round game against minor premiers North Tamworth, and the tactic worked, taking a close to full side into the final round searching for a maiden victory.
“We thought we had a bit of a chance against the Diggers and it paid off.” Unfortunately it doesn’t look like Oxley will get a re-match next season with Group 19 considering not releasing the club. “We would prefer to stay in Group 4 but will see what happens,” Carson said. “They are talking about bringing Bundarra, Bingara and a few others all back.”
