POLICE from the Tamworth district’s Oxley Local Area Command have taken out the fourth position in this year’s NSW Police Rugby Union Cup.
The team of 25 police and associates, known as the Oxley Cods, travelled to Nelson Bay this week to play against six other teams.
They took on their Central Hunter hosts as well as teams from Lake Macquarie, Central Tablelands, Bourke, Goulburn and Ku Ring-gai.
They donned jerseys, sponsored by the South Tamworth KFC restaurant, in remembrance of fallen police comrade Senior Constable David Rixon, who was killed while on duty at the beginning of the year.
The jerseys featured Senior Constable Rixon’s image on the front, with memorial text and a black armband on the left sleeve.
One of the memorial jerseys was presented to his widow, Fiona, before the team left for the competition at the beginning of the week.
Several of the Oxley command’s new recruits joined the Cods this year.
The team hosted the carnival last year in Tamworth.
