The legendary singer songwriter has released new single ‘Aussie Girls’ and for him, the timing couldn’t be better, with the Rio Olympics officially opened on Saturday.
From champion jockey Michelle Payne to the Matilda’s and our Australian swim team the Dolphins, WIlliamson paid tribute to the women who have brought home the gold on so many occasions. He told The Leader the idea for the song had been with him for some time because he believed more recognition should be directed to our women in sport. “I’ve thought about it for years,” he said.
“We haven’t really got a song to celebrate the toughness, talent and strength of Aussie girl athletes, who often win more gold medals than the boys do. I am very proud of them and have been for a very long time.”
Williamson already has some high profile fans of the song already, with former Olympic swimmer Dawn Fraser among them.
“Hopefully this encourages the Aussie girl champions, but it’s also something to sing about our past champions,” he said.
Williamson said he hoped the song could get a play after an Aussie win at the Olympics.
In addition to his new single, the country star will release a 4CD collection His Favourite Collection, in time for Father’s Day. The collection will include more than 50 of his songs and some of his favourite photos, capturing career highlights over the years.
Of course, the collection will feature all the industry favourites including his Calypso and sing-a-long songs, along with his true blue love songs and country ballads.
And as for what’s next; he’ll be headlining the Gympie Muster later on in the month and the Deniliquin Ute Muster, on September 30.
From there, he’s off to the Tweed Valley Country Roots Festival in October, as well as performing a number of tour dates in regional Australia.
