Oxley Health Care GP Dr Casey Sullivan has spent most of her career in Tamworth and said she was privileged to share many families’ milestones.
“Family medicine sees you follow patients from the cradle to the grave,” Dr Sullivan said.
“It’s a holistic approach and there is a huge scope.”
But the family health field has its highs and lows, Dr Sullivan said.
“It’s inspiring because you get to share the joys, like when they become pregnant,” she said.
“Also giving diagnoses, once we know what’s wrong, it can be quite liberating, because we can start to treating it.
“It’s heartbreaking when you’re working with a family through a miscarriage, so there are lows.”
The Australian Medical Association (AMA) is celebrating the country’s GPs with family doctor week until July 30. The AMA said GP’s treat more than 11 million patients suffering chronic disease every year.
