WORK on the next stage of Gunnedah’s new CCTV network has begun and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The $50,000 stage two installation and rollout of the network will see cameras set up around the town’s CBD.
Gunnedah Shire Council allocated $50,000 towards the next stage, which will target areas with high pedestrian traffic.
The council’s community planning and development manager, Kylie Smith, said the additional cameras would enhance coverage in the CBD and provide an additional measure for public safety.
Stage one of the project was switched on nearly a year ago.
Since then, the cameras have been a valuable asset to the community, by deterring criminal behaviour and detecting illegal vehicle activity.
The Gunnedah Crime Prevention Committee was the driving force behind the installation of the surveillance cameras.
The group determined the location of the cameras based on NSW police crime statistics and other environmental considerations.
The new cameras to be installed are similar to the ones in use, which use state-of-the-art technology to ensure maximum resolution and picture quality.
They have the capability to record black-and-white footage as well as colour, with day- or night-sensitive lenses.
Tamworth is still awaiting the installation of its next stage of the CCTV rollout in the CBD.
There are already four in operation, but Tamworth Regional Council’s Crime Prevention Working Group hopes to push for four more in the future as funding becomes available.
