The veteran and former Crossfit instructor had previously traveled to Texas in 2015 to be treated for his traumatic brain injury. 

The opportunity for precious rehab treatment was made possible thanks to overwhelming community support and a crowdfunding campaign which raised more than $13,000. 

But his trip next week will be funded out of his own pocket and not a selfish venture. 

Mr Fewson said it will be partially a check-up and also about advocating for a better link up between traumatic brain injury treatment in Australia and the United States

The father of three will be going to the prestigious University of California Los Angeles Operation Mend clinic, which specialises in treating military and football head injuries.

“I think it will be more of a check up consult, and then a chance for feedback with the doctors and nurses back here and help create that link between Australia and the US,” Mr Fewson said.

The Crossfit trainer has also revealed he is in the early stages of writing a book about his life.

Mr Fewson said he was motivated to start recording his own story because of his unknown future and the loss of his own father at a very young age.

“It’s because of George, our little one and being frank my Dad passed away when I was quite young, only one. He was adopted so I know nothing about his background,” Mr Fewson said.

“I was very fortunate that I was contacted by an editor who has written and edited numerous military biographies … he has helped steer me in the right direction.”

While Mr Fewson said he is unsure at this stage whether his biography will be published, recording his story is therapeutic and can be read by his children when they are older. 

“It is for my sons, so they have an understanding of what Dad was like and what he did,” he said.

Mr Fewson will travel to Los Angeles with his wife next week.

The trip won’t be purely medical with the former gym owner also attending the world Crossfit games.
