Yesterday the CCC side excelled, with all four players shooting 76 or less around a wet Tamworth course where the 5900 or so metres seemed far greater.

Harry Doig and Jones Comerford led the way with two over par 72s. 

Brad Doherty fired a 76 and Harrison Crowe shot a 75 to give the team a two-round total of 432.

They are 23 shots ahead of their nearest rivals, the Combined Independent Schools side.

Neither team can win the CHS Teams Championship,  convener Mark Skein said.

“They are invited to play,” he said.

“But they can be selected in the NSW All Schools team.”

That selection process started earlier this year when the secondary students played the 36-hole stroke play championship at Taree along with the Match Play Championship.

All those count in the All Schools selection process, which is just not about who finishes with the best scores, Skein said.

“It’s also about attitude and demeanour,’ he said. “We have a selection panel chaired by the NSW All School team managers and two others.”

They select six boys and six girls at the completion of today’s third team championship round and submit it to an overseeing body chaired by Skein.

They don’t rubber-stamp those selections either and will hear various reasons why the players should or should not be selected.

It’s a fair and equitable process to find not only the best players but the best ambassadors.

North west sports organiser Richard Rowlings marvelled at how well some of the young players hit the ball yesterday.

“There was no run out there.

“There was none Tuesday and it will be the same tomorrow (today). 

“While it does make the course a lot longer, it does help that the greens are so soft.

“They can hit the ball at the pin.”
