While snow conditions have shut the highway twice this week, it was black ice near Bendemeer that triggered an emergency yesterday.
Emergency services were called to two separate accidents on the highway early yesterday, after vehicles in the northbound and southbound lanes lost control.
No-one was injured, but the incidents prompted police to shut the highway, near the Moonbis, between Tamworth and Uralla, for safety concerns.
The highway was closed in both directions and traffic turned away for several hours before conditions eased.
The highway was reopened mid-morning.
On Saturday, the New England Highway was closed between Armidale and Glen Innes because of black ice, and again on Monday.
