The four-man team of Tom Gill (73), Jock McPherson (76), Toby Cooper (82) and Jack Carey (87) enter this morning’s second round in fourth position, team manager Gordon Rae said.
“It’s a pretty handy result for us,” Rae said of the 2016 championship at Tamworth Golf Club.
“Tom’s seventh overall after a 73 (3 over par) and Jock is 16th. Toby is 28th and Jack 38th.
“Bree (Purse) also played well and is 13th (out of 25) after shooting 88.”
Rae was particularly pleased with Carey’s round.
“He’s knocked his handicap down from 22 to 15 in two months.
“He’ll be on single figures soon.”
43 boys and 25 girls teed off in the annual championships yesterday that also doubles as a selection trial for the NSW All Schools team.
Six boys and six girls will be selected to play in the NSW All Schools side at the National All schools in Adelaide in October.
“We’ve already played 36 holes stroke at Taree as well as the Match Play Finals,” NSW CHS and All Schools golf convener Mark Skein said.
“They were the first rounds of the selections trials.
“And the team will be selected after these three rounds here (at Tamworth).”
Dubbo’s Jones Comerford led the way yesterday, shooting a one under par 69 around a long layout still wet underfoot.
He leads by a shot from Kinross Wolaroi’s James Conran and then a gang of four – Isaiah Melia, Harrison Crowe, Jordie Garner and Chad Mackey – who shot one over par 71s.
