Icelandic football commentator Gudmundur Benediktsson has had quite the week.

After delivering the most memorable snippet of commentary at Euro 2016 last week as Arnor Ingvi Traustason secured Iceland's first ever victory in the competition, Benediktsson proved he was no one-hit wonder with his calling of Iceland's shock win over England on Tuesday morning.

When Iceland's Kolbein Sigthorsson scored what would ultimately be the winning goal in a 2-1 victory, the commentator once again hit a high pitch.

Benediktsson was thrust into the spotlight last Thursday when his commentary on his nation's 94th-minute winner for Siminn TV went viral.

However, things are not going so smoothly back home, with the former Iceland international recently learning that he had lost his day job as assistant coach of KR Reykjavik.

The news was broken via KR, who released a statement announcing Benediktsson had been relieved of his duties, along with head coach Bjarni Eggerts Gudjonsson, after a season of "unacceptable performances."

Iceland will face France in the quarter-finals on Monday at 5am AEST.
