In most places it wasn’t quite the spectacle some might have been hoping for, but many visitors who made a special trip to the New England can go home having seen the white stuff.
The heaviest falls seem to have been in the Hanging Rock area above Nundle, with one visitor to Russell Sydenham’s farm saying he thought about 4 to 5 inches had settled in the high country.
At the other end of the snow scale, a Guyra businessman said some people who’d travelled to what can be a snow-prone town would have gone away disappointed.
Niangala school principal Annette Brown said there had been a light fall, which had led to the bus run being cancelled.
“When I actually got to work, it was snowing and there was snow on the playground,” Mrs Brown said.
“There was snow when the kids got to school this morning with their parents and carers.
“They’ve had snow before – last year we ended up having to close the school for two days – but it’s still fairly exciting; the kids love it.”
Walcha tourism manager Susie Crawford said the town was just nicely “dusted with icing sugar” yesterday morning.
Sole’s Newsagency’s Steven Sole said “a little bit fell through the day” at Guyra.
“But nothing settled on the ground, and I think there’s only a frost forecast for the morning,” Mr Sole said yesterday.
“Today I think it might have got to 2 degrees – that’s as hot as it got.
“I think some people would have been pretty disappointed. A lot of people travelled here from the coast or somewhere hoping to see snow on Saturday, but all we got was a big frost.”
Hanging Rock was where the real snow action was.
Newish Tamworth resident Justin Reeders visited the Sydenham farm and said there was “plenty of snow” there.
“I took the four-wheel-drive to get there – you wouldn’t have got there without it,” he said.
“There was plenty of snow, it was beautiful.”
“Up the top of the property, there was probably four or five inches on the ground, but probably not quite that much at Sheba Dams.”
Although there were reports of a light fall south of Uralla, there was none in town.
