Travis Lee McLeod has pleaded not guilty to four charges, after he appeared in Armidale Local Court  last week.

Detectives allege McLeod shot a 23-year-old man in the thigh inside a home on Cookes Rd, Armidale, in the early hours of March 16.

The man presented at the emergency department of Armidale hospital just before 4am with a gunshot wound, sparking the police investigation.

The alleged victim was transferred to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle for specialist treatment but was released in the days following.

Police allege McLeod had no intent to shoot the man, but was reckless with the handling of the firearm inside the Cookes Rd home.

The Armidale local has pleaded not guilty to reckless grievous bodily harm, firing a firearm in a manner likely injure someone, possessing an unauthorised but prohibited firearm and using the same prohibited firearm.

The pleas come after the defence were served with a brief of evidence which included a ballistics report about the firearm, which police allege was modified to a shortened firearm, making it a prohibited weapon in NSW.

The court heard seven witnesses were expected to be called to give evidence about what happened inside the home when the alleged shooting occurred.
