I do, however, strongly believe that animals from all over the world share the same rights, not just Australian animals. The welfare of all these animals should be looked after.
Going into this election, some parties are pushing for a ban on live export.
I am appealing to citizens considering voting for these parties to consider this – these overseas markets will continue to purchase livestock for protein purposes.
At least by purchasing livestock from Australia, we can continue to help educate and train people from these markets to improve their animal welfare practices for all animals.
There are other countries that are prepared to export stock to these markets without making any improvements.
In addition, between the severe drought and the previous live export ban, Australia’s livestock numbers are significantly lower than previous years.
An article in Beef Central states that this financial year sees the smallest closing inventory since 1994-95.
Add to that the seasonality of the industry, and it is hardly fair to blame job losses in the processing sector just on live export.
