The club had a number of teams from around the region turn up to play in a fours format to celebrate the 80 years of operations that began with its formation in 1935 and initial games in 1936.
“We did get to play for a little while,” club president and life member Bob Hennessey said.
“While it did force us off, we had a brilliant day.
“We had teams from Glen Innes, Charlestown, Bowls NSW and Bowls Australia, Bendemeer, Manilla, Werris Creek, Quirindi and Walcha as well as all the local clubs and all our own members here.
“Unfortunately it just became too wet.”
The bowls winners were decided by blind draws.
A combined Glen Innes and Tamworth City team won from a Manilla four skipped by Billy Bonnett.
“We made a few presentations as well,” Hennessey said.
Joyce Hennessey is the only founding member of the West women’s club and she received a presentation as did Eileen King, who has been a member of the club for more than 50 years.
Ron Dietrich was another long-serving member to be honoured as were three young girls from the club – Tara and Zoe Stewart and Casey Cone – who played at last week’s state championships in Blacktown.
Damon Sullivan was also another acknowledged for his hard work as a staff member of the club.
“All in all, it’s been a great day,” Hennessey added.
“We had Peter Beven (Bowls Australia) and Chris Green (Bowls NSW) here to help as well.”
The club also staged a big charity day for the Tamworth Base Hospital’s Rehabilitation Unit yesterday where more than 40 prizes were available for those attending.
