Emergency services were still on the scene of the double fatality on Thunderbolts Way at Rocky River late last night as forensic police combed the charred wreckages.
The semi-trailer and B-double collided just before 2pm, about 20km out of Uralla, before both truck cabs burst into flames.
Two people, who police believe were the drivers, died at the scene.
Police said it was too early to confirm the identities or ages of the pair, but one of the trucks belongs to a local haulage company.
A crime scene was established and road blocks set up, as traffic was turned around.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
