TAMWORTH’S representative women’s hockey side completed a frustrating weekend in front of goals when they slumped to a 1-nil loss in their State A Division relegation game at Narellan yesterday.

The Graeme McKenzie-coached side frittered away many more good chances in the attacking circle yesterday and will now play in the B Division next year.
In contrast the Hockey New England side won its final ranking game against Dubbo yesterday and will start as the fifth-ranked team in the B Division next year after their 3-2 win while the Tamworth Frogs’ A and B sides also registered final-day rankings wins in their State Championships at Moorebank.
The Andrew Farmilo-coached Frogs beat Newcastle 6-2 yesterday to finish fifth in a division they could have easily won if they’d have produced some of the goalscoring earlier in the weekend that they showed yesterday.
The Ian Woodley-coached Tamworth B men’s side beat Wagga Wagga 3-2 in their final ranking game while Paul Eichorn’s New England women’s side excelled in a two-goal victory over a strong Dubbo side.
“It was a great way to finish the weekend,” Eichorn said.
“We really did play well in our last game – very fast and very skilful.”
In contrast, McKenzie bemoaned the lack of a goalscoring striker to take advantageof the many opportunities created by his midfield over the weekend.
“It was very frustrating,” McKenzie said
“We had plenty of opportunities over the weekend but couldn’t score.
“If we had scored some goals yesterday and Saturday we would have been playing in the semi-finals.
“Instead we found ourselves in a relegation game with Bathurst.
“They had dominated early and led 1-nil at half time.
“We lost the plot a bit 10 or 15 minutes in and they took advantage to score a goal but we then dominated the last 10 minutes of the first half and into the second.
“We thought we had equalised too in the second half when Kate Jenner’s hit into the circle was deflected in by Pip Ash.
“But after initially awarding the goal, the umpires conferred and disallowed it.”
They ruled Ash had not got a touch but the Tamworth player told her coach she had managed to touch it and deflect it in.
“That hurt even more considering a draw would have kept Tamworth in the top flight next year,” McKenzie said.
He said a lot more planning and training would need to be introduced next year to earn elevation after there was little preparation for this year’s State Championship.
He said Jenner and Taylah King were outstanding at the back for Tamworth.
“Everyone chipped in,” he said.
Unfortunately Abigail Doolan suffered a crack in her thumb, placing her attendance at a national junior championship in a few weeks in jeopardy.
